The 3rd National Weight Management Conference Held in Hangzhou

  The 3rd National Weight Management Academic Conference took place in Hangzhou from May 5th to 7th, 2023. The conference was organized by the CNHFA, supervised by the Weight Management Professional Committee of the CNHFA (hereinafter referred to as the Committee), hosted by Zhejiang Jiasu Nutrition Technology Promotion Centre, and co-organized by Shenzhen Hospital of Southern Medical University, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, the Tenth People’s Hospital of Tongji University, and the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University. The conference aimed to standardize and enhance awareness and understanding in several areas, including malnutrition/wasting (muscle wasting disorder) and overweight/obesity within the medical community, universities, communities, and corporate R&D. It also aimed to facilitate academic exchanges among various subspecialties of clinical nutrition, integrate efforts across industry, academia, research, and application, establish a platform for disciplinary development and collaborative innovation, and promote the establishment of a standardized, cutting-edge, innovative, and data-supported weight management treatment model for wasting and obesity.

  The meeting was attended by over 400 participants, including all members of the Committee, representatives of the sponsoring organizations, and other attendees. Additionally, the following distinguished guests were present: Li Liangqiu, Executive Vice President, and Zhang Zhongpeng, Secretary General of the CNHFA; Ding Gangqiang, Director of the Institute of Nutrition and Health at the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention; Professor Zheng Chao, Member of the Party Committee of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine; Professor Yang Hua, Director of the Department of General Surgery at Chongqing People’s Hospital; Professor Yu Kang, Director of the Professional Committee of Nutrition Physicians of the Chinese Medical Association; Professor Wang Zhixu, Director of the Professional Committee on Maternal and Infant Nutrition of the CNHFA; and Professor Zhu Cuifeng, Director of the Committee and Director of the Department of Clinical Nutrition at Southern Medical University Shenzhen Hospital.

  The opening ceremony was held on May 6th, co-chaired by Huang Yan, Director of the Information and Communication Department of the CNHFA, and Professor Zhang Pianhong, Deputy Director of the Committee and Director of the Department of Nutrition at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine.

  During her speech at the conference, Li Liangqiu expressed her full appreciation for the conference agenda and the accomplishments of the Committee in promoting the standardization of weight management clinical practice in China and enhancing overall health. She emphasized the significance of weight management in disease prevention and control, aligning with the national strategy, CNHFA's mission, and the Committee's vision. Li Liangqiu also stated that CNHFA will continue to support the Committee in conducting academic and scientific research activities, as well as promoting awareness among the public. Furthermore, she highlighted the association's commitment to expanding its influence and providing strong support for the standardization process of weight management.

  In her speech, Zhu Cuifeng first presented the epidemiology of overweight obesity and the impact of muscle wasting disorders. She emphasized the urgency and significance of weight management, highlighting the conference as a valuable resource for establishing a robust and standardized process for screening, assessment, diagnosis, and the development of effective prevention and treatment strategies. Zhu Cuifeng specifically emphasized the importance of addressing overweight obesity prevention and treatment, muscle wasting disorders, as well as advancements in weight management and reproductive endocrine research. She expressed her optimism for the Committee's growth and development, emphasizing the continuous promotion of standardized weight management treatment models, the establishment of standardized treatment pathways, and the integration of industry, academia, and research.

  In his speech, Professor Zheng Chao shared insights into the weight management standardized diagnosis and treatment practices at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, a renowned hospital in the field. He highlighted the significance of the conference as an academic feast that combines continuing education and multidisciplinary academic exchange. Professor Zheng emphasized the crucial role that such a gathering plays in promoting the development of weight management standardization and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration in China.

  Obesity poses a significant health risk to both the global and Chinese populations, increasing the susceptibility to various chronic diseases and premature mortality. The conference placed a strong emphasis on the standardized diagnosis and treatment of overweight and obesity and unveiled the book "Treatment of Obesity." During her speech, Liu Yanyan, Director of the Surgical Editorial Department at the People's Medical Publishing House, highlighted that the book presents an obesity treatment approach tailored to China's unique circumstances. It integrates the clinical expertise of domestic medical and nutrition experts, drawing from both domestic and international obesity-related treatment guidelines and the latest research findings.

  The Committee initiated the 5.11 Prevention and Treatment of Obesity and its Complications Public Welfare Campaign in 2021, aiming to enhance public awareness of obesity and its associated complications, disseminate scientific knowledge on obesity prevention and treatment, and promote evidence-based lifestyles. During the opening ceremony of the conference, Professor Zhang Fan, Deputy Director of the Committee and Director of the Department of Endocrinology at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, presented a summary of the 5.11 campaign in 2022 and outlined the work plan for 2023. Building upon the successful outcomes of the previous campaign, which included a significant number of participants, diverse themes and forms, and extensive scales and collaborative efforts, the Committee and its members are set to launch another event from 6 to 14 May 2023. This upcoming campaign will involve charity clinics, lectures, and live broadcasts to educate the public and patients on scientific knowledge related to nutrition, weight management, and the prevention and treatment of obesity and its complications, ultimately enhancing their health literacy.

  The 2023 5.11 campaign, dedicated to the prevention and treatment of obesity and its complications, was jointly launched by a distinguished group of guests. These esteemed individuals include Executive Vice President Li Liangqiu, Professor Yang Hua, Professor Yu Kang, Professor Zhu Cuifeng, Professor Zhang Fan, Professor Zhang Pianhong, Professor Han Ting, Professor Zhou Li, Professor Zhang Yongsheng, and Professor Liu Juying. With the guidance and expertise of these esteemed committee members, we anticipate a highly successful and impactful event.


  In the academic presentation session, esteemed experts and scholars shared their insights on cutting-edge topics related to weight management and dietary nutrition, pharmacotherapy, weight loss surgery, reproductive function, establishment of weight management MDT clinics, and scientific management of muscle wasting disorders. The distinguished panel of speakers included Li Liangqiu, Executive Vice President of the CNHFA, Ding Gangqiang, Director of the Institute of Nutrition and Health of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Professor Li Zengning, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Dental Hospital of Hebei Medical University, Professor Yang Hua, Director of the Department of General Surgery of Chongqing People's Hospital, Professor Yu Kang, Director of the Professional Committee of Nutrition Physicians of the Chinese Medical Association, Professor Wang Zhixu, Director of the Professional Committee of Maternal and Child Nutrition of the CNHFA, Professor Zhang Fan, Director of the Department of Endocrinology at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, Professor Zhang Pianhong, Director of the Department of Nutrition at The Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, and Professor Zhu Cuifeng, Director of the Committee.

  To facilitate the exchange of innovative ideas in the precise prevention and treatment of overweight obesity and muscle wasting disorders, the conference featured four specialized sub-forums. These included the 2nd Weight Management Youth Lecture Competition, the Obesity Management Sub-Forum, the Muscle Wasting Disorders (Malnutrition Diagnosis and Treatment) Sub-Forum, and the Weight Management and Reproductive Endocrinology Sub-Forum. These sub-forums provided valuable platforms for in-depth discussions and knowledge sharing among experts in their respective fields.

  A total of 24 participants showcased their expertise in the 2nd Weight Management Youth Presentation Competition, which featured various formats such as science publicity and education, research project demonstrations, and clinical case sharing. These young experts in weight management covered a wide range of topics including standardized weight management pathways, weight management for patients with muscle wasting syndrome, and the management of polycystic ovary syndrome in patients with depression. The Muscle Wasting Disorders (Malnutrition Diagnosis and Treatment) Sub-Forum focused on the management of muscle wasting diseases in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other chronic adult conditions. The discussions provided valuable insights for a comprehensive understanding of muscle wasting disorders and offered guidance for improving their prevention and treatment strategies. At the Weight Management and Reproductive Endocrinology Sub-Forum, experts highlighted the latest research advancements in nutritional disorders and reproductive health, emphasizing the crucial role of weight management in enhancing reproductive function from various perspectives and levels.

  The third plenary session of the Committee was convened concurrently with the conference. During the meeting, one deputy director, six standing members, and 23 members were appointed. Zhu Cuifeng, Director of the Weight Management Professional Committee of the CNHFA and Director of the Department of Clinical Nutrition at Southern Medical University Shenzhen Hospital, provided a comprehensive overview of the committee's accomplishments in 2022 and presented the work plan for 2023. The deputy directors also shared their perspectives on the progress made in the past year.


  This event serves as a significant platform for high-level professional exchange in the field of weight management in China. It has significantly enhanced the diagnostic capabilities and service quality of weight management organizations, teams, and individuals, providing the public and patients with more scientific and effective solutions for weight management. The Committee is committed to collaborating with fellow experts to advance the standardization of weight management and contribute to the implementation of the Healthy China strategy. The 4th National Weight Management Conference is scheduled to take place in Chongqing from 10-12 May 2024, and we eagerly anticipate reconnecting with you next year.
