The China Nutrition and Health Food Association Held a Seminar on the Health Functions of Health Food

   On April 25th, the China Nutrition and Health Food Association (CNHFA) held a seminar on the health functions of health food and the sixth session of free open courses on special food policies and regulations in Beijing. The participants exchanged their views on the health functions of health food based on the health food policies and regulations recently issued by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR). Bian Zhenjia, president of the CNHFA, Zhou Shiping , director of the Special Food Safety Regulation Department of the SAMR, Wan Chao, division director of the Special Food Safety Regulation Department of the SAMR, representatives from the Center for Food evaluation, industry experts, and representative members of the CNHFA attended the meeting.
  
  The meeting was presided over by Secretary General Liu Xuecong. Division Director Wan Chao introduced the recent health food registration management work and the background and content of the Announcement on the Health Functions of Health Food (Draft for Comment); Deputy Secretary-General Guo Haifeng introduced the evaluation methods of health food functions used in Japan, South Korea, the European Union, Australia, Taiwan and other regions. Luo Rong from the Health Food Research and Development Committee of the CNHFA introduced the exploration and research progress of new functions of health food.
  
  At the meeting, the CNHFA gave feedback on more than 200 suggestions collected from enterprises in the industry. The following experts proposed their recommendations and suggestions: Yan Weixing, deputy director of the China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment, Sun Xiaobo, director of the Medicinal Plants Institute of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Li Keji, professor of the Public Health School of Peking University, Zhang Lishi, professor of the West China Public Health School of Sichuan University, Wang Jingzhong, research fellow of the Nutrition and Health Institute of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Zhou Yuhong, research fellow of the China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment, Chen Haoyu, associate researcher of the Academy of Military Medical Sciences, Fan Xing, PhD of the Health Department of the General Logistics Department of the People's Liberation Army, and Mao Weiqi, a lawyer from the Beijing Shangzuo Law Office.
  
  President Bian pointed out that Chinese consumers have huge needs for health food and that health food has a huge market. Therefore, health food should stay on the market and should be well-regulated to become healthier. China has a 1.3 billion population. There should be more domestic brands to meet the needs of the people's health and well-being and to contribute to the Health China Plan .The SAMR conducted a 100-day campaign to rectify disorders in the health food market, making a positive impact on protecting consumer rights and regulating market order. Scientific evaluation and adjustment of health food functions play important roles for the development of the industry. It is hoped that the regulatory authorities will actively and steadily improve relevant work by communicating deeply with enterprises and experts in the industry.
  
  The CNHFA will continue to focus on government regulatory requirements and issues of concern related to health food, infant formula, formula food for special medical purposes, infant food supplements and other special diets, and raw ingredients and will organize more advocacy activities and training courses on the policies and regulations of product access, production and operation, monitoring/sampling/inspection, advertising law enforcement, and industrial development.
